Cedarbrook - General:

Limitations of COVID-19 Testing:

As we have mentioned in several of our CSLAlert publications, we have developed an extensive COVID-19 testing program for both our residents and team members. All of our testing is done with a molecular based PCR test. These are the most accurate tests available but, like most tests, they have a small margin of error. The biology of the virus is very complex, even to the experts.

Late last week, we conducted another round of testing on the consenting residents in assisted living and memory care in Northville. All of the tests have come back negative with the exception of two that were positive. One individual is in memory care and the other in assisted living. Each of these cases were individuals who had tested positive in early April and again in mid-April. By the end of April and into early May, each of these residents tested negative. Then, early this week, we received the surprising results that these individuals had tested positive again.

We discussed this testing outcome with our COVID-19 Advisory Board, which includes experts in the field. They explained that the virus can remain in the body at very low levels, which are difficult to detect, for several weeks after initial infection. The virus may also move around the body. Most likely the negative test results from earlier this month were because the virus was below detectable levels in the nasal cavity at the time of testing. The positive result from last week likely means that the virus again rose to detectable levels in the nasal cavity and the resident never completely cleared the virus. There is a very low probability that these residents were re-infected. We will re-test these residents again in seven days.

How will Cedarbrook respond to this finding?

For our team members, nothing changes as they are, and have been, providing care in full PPE. This will not change until a vaccine is available.

Based on the most recent COVID-19 research, it appears that people are most infectious early in the progression of the virus. The research data indicates that people become less infectious as time passes. Given that almost two months had passed since the initial infection was identified, it is probable that these residents pose little or no risk to the general population should they come in contact with each other.

Going forward, if a resident who was COVID-19 positive tests negative, we will now re-administer another test approximately 7 days after the initial negative test was administered.

COVID-19 Update:

As of today, we have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Bloomfield Hills or Rochester. As discussed above, we have two COVID-19 positive individuals at Northville.

Limited Outdoor Visitation:

Last Friday, Governor Whitmer relaxed the “stay at home order” to allow gatherings of up to 10 people. Additionally, certain retail establishments will be allowed to open under tightly controlled conditions. This amended order, now called “Safer at Home”, is scheduled to expire on June 12th - but this does not apply to senior living communities. Visitation remains restricted and we do not expect that the prohibition on visitors entering the interior of our communities will be lifted.

With last week’s changes to the executive order, we will begin a pilot outdoor visitation program with tightly controlled daily visiting hours, beginning on Friday, May 29, 2020.

To begin this pilot program, we will create well defined visitation areas on the exterior of each community. These areas will be defined by canopy tents with limited seating at each location.

These visiting areas will be available by online reservation only for 45-minute blocks of time from Wednesday - Sunday at 9am, 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm. No visitation will be permitted outside of these hours.

We will require that all visitors strictly adhere to their allotted visitation time frame so that our team can disinfect and prepare the area after each visit and allow the next visitor their full 45 minutes.

If circumstances do not permit you to use your reserved time slot, please cancel so that someone else may use this time.

While we do have canopy tents available, inevitably weather will force multiple cancellations. While unfortunate, there is nothing we can do about this and we ask that you reschedule for a future date. Under no circumstances will visitation be allowed inside the buildings.

Time slots will be limited and in high demand. Please be patient. If you are unable to make a reservation for an outdoor visit, you may still set up video calls with your loved one.

This is how outdoor visitation will work:

1. Please bring your N95, KN95 or surgical mask with you and wear it at all times while on the Cedarbrook campus

2. We have created a small number of appropriately distanced visitor spaces and seating outside at each community

3. Families will go online to schedule a time to visit their loved one

4. Upon arriving at the community, please check in 15 minutes before your scheduled time with the concierge

5. No more than two visitors per time slot will be allowed – no exceptions

6. At the conclusion of your visit, we will be cleaning the area and ask that you promptly sign out at the concierge desk

7. Please note that restrooms will NOT be available because we cannot allow you to go beyond the concierge desk

8. Visitation on a resident’s patio or balcony is still prohibited - If you visit, please use one of our designated visiting areas

COVID-19 Update:

As of today, we have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at any of our communities.

COVID-19 Testing:

As we have mentioned in previous CLSAlerts, COVID-19 testing - and lots of it - will be an integral part of our future plans. Unfortunately, given the nature of the virus, the only way that we can possibly protect everyone and prevent, or manage, potential outbreaks within our communities is by doing extensive testing on our residents and team members.

Cedarbrook has coordinated with our preferred physician and Medical Director and has developed a schedule to test consenting residents and all team members approximately twice per month.

To streamline the testing process, a COVID-19 Ongoing Testing Authorization Form will be included with your monthly statement. Please sign and return as soon as possible. This authorization will help our nurses to stay focused on caring for your loved one.

Thank you for helping to keep everyone safe.

Remain Vigilant at All Times:

Our experience this weekend reminds us that we must remain vigilant at all times.

Cedarbrook - Preparing for the Future:

We are planning for a future that acknowledges that we will be working with COVID-19 until a viable vaccine is available to our residents and team. Our plans for the future will always be driven by one objective: How do we keep our residents, family members and Team Cedarbrook safe while “Celebrating Life Every Day”?

With Governor Whitmer’s extension of the stay at home order, we have delayed our announcement regarding Cedarbrook’s plans to allow for limited outdoor visitation. These plans will be introduced in Thursday’s CSLAlert.

Memorial Day:

As we pause to remember those brave souls who have been lost while serving our country and defending our freedom, we also want to thank all who have served, and continue to serve, our country. Our gratitude cannot be adequately expressed.

In recognition of Memorial Day, we will not be posting our CSLAlerts on Monday. We will post a new alert on Tuesday by 3:00 PM.

COVID-19 Update:

As of today, we have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedarbrook of Northville and Cedarbrook of Rochester.

We have one assisted living resident at Cedarbrook of Bloomfield Hills who remains COVID-19 positive. Full isolation protocols are in place for this resident until a negative test result is received.

We recently completed another round of COVID-19 testing at Bloomfield Hills for all of our consenting residents in assisted living, memory care, and nursing care. With the exception of two pending test results in assisted living, all tests have come back negative.

COVID-19 Update:

As of today, we have no known cases of COVID-19 at Cedarbrook of Northville and Cedarbrook of Rochester.

Through our extensive and ongoing testing program, we learned that two Cedarbrook of Bloomfield Hills assisted living residents, who are asymptomatic, tested positive for COVID-19. These residents were immediately placed on full isolation protocols and will remain there until they test negative again.

While we are disappointed in this finding, COVID-19 is still very prevalent in SE Michigan and we must remain diligent to protect our residents and team members. For consenting residents, this is our second complete round of testing for our assisted living neighborhood. This testing is separate from specific individual testing, and in both cases, the majority of tests have come back negative.

Non-Cedarbrook “Essential” Healthcare Workers:

You may remember that under the Governor’s Executive Order, we are required to allow third party “essential” healthcare workers into our buildings. To date, these workers have been screened as they enter our buildings and they are required to wear PPE while in our buildings. We have modified our third-party agreement, which now requires outside service providers to comply with additional requirements, including COVID-19 testing.

COVID-19 Testing:

As we have begun to plan for our future, we have concluded that COVID-19 testing - and lots of it - will be an integral part of our plan. Unfortunately, given the nature of the virus, the only way that we can possibly protect everyone and prevent, or manage, future outbreaks within our communities is by doing extensive testing on our residents and team members.

Test kit availability will now allow us to test each resident and team member approximately twice per month.

To streamline the testing process, a Cedarbrook team member has been reaching out to each resident or the resident’s Power of Attorney for a blanket approval to test for COVID-19 on an ongoing basis. Please respond promptly if you are asked to fill out this form. You are helping to keep everyone safe.

Remain Vigilant at All Times:

Our plans for the future will always be driven by one objective: How do we keep our residents, family members and Team Cedarbrook safe while “Celebrating Life Every Day”?  As our plans unfold, we will provide you with regular updates via our CSLAlerts publications on Mondays and Thursdays.

Personal Protective Equipment and Isolation Protocols:

We continue to use our existing supplies for the protection of our team and residents.  All of our direct care team members are wearing N95 masks and anyone who is working with residents under full isolation protocols is wearing full PPE.

Don’t Keep Us a Secret – Check Out Our Referral Bonus Program:

We love our residents at Cedarbrook!
